Beauty Obsession: The Stylisted

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of experiencing a new beauty service here in Chicago, The Stylisted. I was lucky enough to be included in a Chicago style feature for People Magazine that will be on stands in two weeks, but had a busy day. I had no time to go downtown to have my hair and make-up done.

TheStylisted is an online platform that allows women to book in-home hair styling and makeup appointments from a network of vetted beauty professionals. Gone are the days of rushing to-and-from the salon in rain and high humidity before a big event. Skip the salon, select the best professional for your needs, and wait for beauty to knock at your door.

Bev, my stylist, came to my apartment at 12:30p.m. where she set up shop in my kitchen. All I had to do was have wet hair. I requested a simple but bouncy blowout, and that was exactly what I got. She then went on to do my make-up, and I told her that I do not wear make-up…really, ever. She simply evened out my skin tone and contoured my face, and gave me a soft smokey eye. Bev is the first person I have let touch my face in years, and I loved the result.

I could not have had a better experience. I would highly recommend this to all of my fellow busy women. There is no place like home, after all.

The Light And Dark Of It All

Whether we like it or not, our hair color tends to change a little, or a lot, over the summer. Personally, my dark brown locks get lighter as I spend more and more time outside, no matter what I do to protect them.

For some gals, playing the color switch up game is intentional. It’s a fun time to play around and change up your look. What does it take to care for our hair at any color, or enhance the natural hues? Glamour mag helps fill in the blanks. Here are the best looks to try out for the next few months:

Try adding some movement to your locks by letting your roots grow out a little, and add a softer finish at the ends.

Spending a long day at the beach? Slick your hair into a bun or ponytail with gel. Throughout the day, you won't have to worry about looking drab. Even if you sweat, it will stay polished.

Honey-blonde hair is said to be the best for shine serums or shine finishing treatments. If you want ultra shiny hair all summer long, consider going a few shades darker.

Not sure now to switch it up? Consider a color in between blonde and brunette, and let it lighten up naturally as the summer goes on.

Similar to honey-blonde, a very light brown will pick up shine easily and reflect the natural light of the sun.

A few auburn highlights sprinkled throughout the bottom half of hair will show off its movement and give it added depth. A messy low bun is always the way to go for a long, hot day. The messier it gets, the better it looks.

Ultra dark hair always looks beautiful slicked back with shine serum. Take it the next step with a sharp middle part.

Pump Up The Volume: Rebekah Forecast

Collecting hair tips has become dangerously close to a hobby of mine for the last few months as I keep switching up my braids and buns for messy waves and high ponytails. I recently read an excerpt from an interview with hair guru Rebekah Forecast, named as an ELLE “hair genius,” who primps Amber Heard, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, and Emily Mortimer just to name a few.

To get that beachy, bedhead look, she squeeze dries damp hair with a blow dryer on a low heat setting. She then uses Bumble & Bumble surf spray to add texture, and curls random pieces with a curling iron to define and refine ends.

Best kept secret: A thin, stiff bristled teasing brush. Forecast uses a dry shampoo on roots to add body and roughness, then back-brushes the crown and other random pieces for an undone finish.

Only have five minutes? If you already have product in your hair, wet it down a little. This helps to rejuvenate what is already in your hair, and you will be able to restyle in no time.

With the lazy days of summer close in sight, these tips can help you stay messily polished even in the 100 degree heat headed our way…or so we hope.

Goldplaited

It’s Thursday. In Chicago, Thursday seems to be the new Friday, and therefore, everyone is prepping and primping to go out. Personally, my blowout never looks as good when I do it myself. A professional blowout provides the bounce and volume of a Victoria’s Secret style mane, and quite frankly nothing makes a girl feel better than that.

That’s where Goldplaited comes in. Blowouts can run upwards of $60, and as much as I love my hair, I can not, and will not, pay for that whenever I have something worthy of a blowout. Goldplaited offers a blowout (with a head massage!) for $38, and a dry style for $30. What sets Goldplaited apart from other finishing salons? They also offer make up services. Located right in the heart of Lincoln Park, it could not be any better.

Personally, I’ve been to Goldplaited a few times and would highly recommend it. Mal and Corinna, the sisters who founded this posh spot, are so nice and it feels like you’re right at home with your best girlfriends. The blowout lasts for about two days if you sleep with it the right way. Appointments fill up pretty quickly on the weekends so I would call and snatch one up while you can.

Goldplaited, 773-880-9180. 2803 North Sheffield Avenue.
